Bridges
Dental bridge is a device that is used as a replacement for lost or missing teeth, they fill the missing space. A bridge is one or more artificial teeth that are cemented into place using one’s own teeth on either side, hence the name. Bridges are of two varieties, removable or permanently fixed by placing crowns on the adjacent natural teeth. Fixed bridges are more stable that removable one, although a removable bridge may be taken out and cleaned out periodically.
Procedure for dental bridges
Fitting bridges usually takes a few visits to the dentist, for the procedures to be completed. Initially, the teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel over the sides of the gap. Following the enamel removal, impressions of the teeth are taken and sent to the laboratory to ensure proper fitment and shape to match your natural teeth. Once the permanent bridges are ready, a final visit is made to the dentist, to permanently cement your custom bridges to natural teeth in the space where teeth are missing.
Benefits of bridges in individual with missing teeth
The main role of the teeth is to help us chew food for proper digestion but they also help us with speech and the alignment of our mouth/jaw. Missing teeth severely compromise oral function and bridges help to reinforce the surrounding teeth. Bridges can also restore proper speech and reduce the risk of gum disease that is associated with missing teeth. If you are a missing several teeth, a dental bridge may be the best option for you.
